The United States had to stop listening in on former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern’s phone after requests for a dig out nearly caused the NSA to go bust.

The Guardian has revealed that the US listened in on the calls of 35 world leaders.

‘It was like Bertie was spying on us.’

However, it soon became 34 after NSA staff were subjected to repeated requests for dig outs.

“It wasn’t viable,” a former NSA employee said. “We had to go to Congress for more money. The NSA nearly went bust.”

“Staff were even reaching into our own pockets,” he added. “I had to take a second job.”

“He always seemed to know when we had money. It was like Bertie was spying on us.”
